Bayern goalless after 59 games, draws

Defending Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich failed to score for the first time in 59 matches, held to a goalless 0-0 draw by newly promoted Schalke 04.

Winger Luis Díaz squandered two clear opportunities on either side of halftime when face-to-face with Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius.

On his first attempt, Díaz dragged his shot wide. Later in the match, his chipped effort over Karius was cleared off the goal line by a Schalke defender.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany rotated his starting lineup following a 5-1 league opening victory against Stuttgart and a 4-1 DFB-Pokal win over VfL Osnabrück.

Harry Kane and Michael Olise began the match on the bench as Bayern dominated possession during an unproductive first half.

Kompany introduced Kane at the start of the second half, later bringing on Olise and Jamal Musiala to intensify the attack for the final 35 minutes.

Musiala made his season debut following recovery from muscle spasms experienced during pre-season training.

Schalke's defensive discipline frustrated the champions throughout the second half.

Bayern midfielder Konrad Laimer sent a close-range effort wide, while Karius tipped a late, top-corner-bound strike from Kane over the crossbar to earn Schalke their first point of the season.

The match marked Kane's 96th appearance in the Bundesliga. The England captain remains two goals short of reaching 100 Bundesliga goals, well within the record of 129 matches for the fastest century of goals in league history.

Prior to the match, Kane had scored against all 20 Bundesliga opponents he had faced, bringing his tally to 20 out of 21 teams following the scoreless draw.

The result marks the first time in 67 Bundesliga match-days - nearly two full years - that Bayern Munich failed to finish a match-day at the top of the league standings.

Bayern next host Bodø/Glimt in their UEFA Champions League opener on Thursday before visiting newly promoted Elversberg on September 13.
