Death penalty of 2 JMB men in Rangpur shrine caretaker murder case upheld

The High Court on Sunday upheld the death sentence of two members of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the 2015 case filed over the murder of Rahmat Ali, caretaker of a shrine in Rangpur’s Kaunia upazila.

At the same time, the court acquitted five other death-row convicts in the case.

The High Court bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Sathi Hossain delivered the verdict.

Earlier, on March 18, 2018, a Rangpur court had sentenced seven people to death and acquitted six others in connection with the murder.

According to the case details, on the night of November 10, 2015, JMB members slit the throat of Rahmat Ali, caretaker of the shrine at Choitar Mor in Madhupur union under Kaunia upazila, killing him on the spot.

Victim Rahmat Ali was a follower of the Tariqa-panthi Sureshwari Peer and served as the shrine's caretaker, operating a darbar sharif at his residence. Following the incident, the victim's son, Shafikul Islam, filed a murder case at Kaunia Police Station.
