President Mirza Fakhrul visits parents’ graves

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited the graves of his parents at Senua Cemetery in Thakurgaon on Sunday during the first day of his two-day official visit to his home district.

He reached the cemetery at around 1:20pm and stood silently beside his parents’ graves for some time before joining prayers and a dua. Senior local administration officials welcomed him at the cemetery.

Family members, close relatives, local representatives and administrative officials were present during the visit. Security was also strengthened in and around the cemetery ahead of his arrival.

After paying respects at his parents’ graves, the president exchanged greetings with local elderly people and others present there.

Later in the day, he is scheduled to attend a civic reception organised by a citizens’ committee at the Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School playground.

On Monday, the final day of his visit, President Mirza Fakhrul is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the proposed Thakurgaon University in Jamalpur area beside the Thakurgaon-Pirganj road.

He is scheduled to leave Thakurgaon for Bangabhaban by helicopter from the helipad at Thakurgaon Stadium at around 2pm.

Security has been tightened across the district, with law enforcement personnel deployed at key locations, including Senua Cemetery, the circuit house, the president’s residence and the stadium.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected the 23rd president of Bangladesh on August 20, securing 255 votes against 88 won by his rival, Col (retd) Oli Ahmad.
