A detainee and a convicted prisoner died after falling ill at Dhaka Central Jail on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as Abul Bashar, 54, a detainee, and Abdul Qaiyum, 62, a convicted prisoner.
According to prison officials, Bashar, from Kachua in Chandpur, suddenly fell ill at the jail in the morning. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in an unconscious state, where doctors at the emergency department declared him dead.
In a separate incident, Qaiyum, from Chauddagram in Cumilla, also fell ill at the jail and was taken to DMCH, where he was pronounced dead.
The cases were confirmed by Md Habibur Rahman, inspector-in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, quoting doctors.
The bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsies. Inquests will be conducted in the presence of an executive magistrate before the bodies are handed over to the families following the necessary prison formalities.
