Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not attend the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in India next week, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir on Thursday.

He said Dhaka was not satisfied with the way the invitation had been extended to the prime minister.

Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Service Academy, Kabir said the Premier had been invited to the BRICS summit in his capacity as chair of BIMSTEC, rather than as Bangladesh’s prime minister.

“How can he go? Has anyone from the Bangladesh government been formally invited?” the state minister asked.

“Tarique Rahman has been invited to BRICS as the chair of BIMSTEC. He has not been invited as the prime minister,” he said.

Humayun Kabir, however, indicated that Tarique Rahman could undertake a bilateral visit to India in the future.

He said Bangladesh was currently placing greater emphasis on bilateral engagement with New Delhi rather than participation in multilateral forums.

“We are focusing more on bilateral visits and discussions.''

He added that a bilateral visit would take place when conditions were conducive and mutual respect was maintained.
