Gas crisis cuts CNG drivers’ earnings

Long queues at CNG filling stations are eating into the working hours and daily earnings of auto-rickshaw drivers in Dhaka, with many struggling to pay their vehicle owners’ daily deposits.

A visit to several CNG filling stations in the capital from Friday morning to noon found drivers waiting for hours to refuel. Low gas pressure at some stations was also slowing the process.

Drivers said they often have to return to filling stations twice a day, leaving less time to carry passengers and earn money.

Imrul, a CNG driver in Moghbazar, said he waits three to four hours for gas every day. Even after the long wait, he sometimes receives only a small quantity, leaving him unable to drive for long.

Another driver, Mohsin, said he has to pay Tk 1,200 a day to the vehicle owner.

“It takes three to four hours to get gas. Sometimes, because of low pressure, I can buy only Tk 100 to Tk 120 worth of gas. After driving for three or four hours, I have to return to the station,” he said.

“Our earnings have fallen, and it has become difficult to support our families,” he added.

The drivers said their household expenses had not decreased despite the fall in income.

They urged the authorities to restore gas pressure and supply as soon as possible to end the long queues at CNG stations.
