Year-round efforts needed to prevent dengue

The government has called for year-round efforts to identify and destroy potential Aedes mosquito breeding grounds to prevent dengue.
Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam made the call while inspecting a cleanliness and dengue prevention campaign in Dhanmondi on Saturday.
The inspection was part of a three-month nationwide dengue prevention and cleanliness campaign inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad earlier in the day.
The state minister, who also chairs the national dengue task force, visited Road 27 in Dhanmondi and the Rapa Plaza area to observe cleanliness activities and inspect potential breeding grounds. He also spoke to Dhaka South City Corporation officials and cleaners about the progress of the campaign.
“Dengue must be prevented at any cost. It is not enough to conduct campaigns only at specific times. Potential Aedes breeding grounds must be identified and destroyed regularly throughout the year,” he said.
He said dengue prevention efforts should become a sustained social movement involving government agencies, individuals, families, educational institutions, businesses, voluntary organisations and people from all sections of society.
Briefing reporters after the inspection, Mir Shahe Alam said the three-month campaign aimed not only to kill mosquitoes but also to prevent the creation of breeding grounds through cleanliness and public awareness.
He stressed the need to keep homes, under-construction buildings, public and private institutions, educational establishments and surrounding areas clean.
The state minister said steps were being taken to increase the number of city corporation cleaners and strengthen the scope and capacity of cleanliness activities.
He identified construction sites as particularly high-risk areas for Aedes breeding and urged building owners, developers and others concerned to ensure that water did not accumulate in construction materials, drums, buckets, pits or other places.
He warned that those who create Aedes breeding grounds through negligence despite being advised to remain alert could face fines or imprisonment under the law through mobile courts.
However, he urged everyone to help prevent dengue through awareness and responsible behaviour rather than waiting for punitive action.
Earlier, the state minister inspected a cleanliness drive by voluntary organisation BD Clean at the Sewerage Bhaban in the capital and gave necessary directions to those concerned.
