Bangladesh and Japan have signed an agreement to strengthen maritime security and safety, under which Japan will provide a 35-metre-class patrol vessel to the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and Economic Relations Division Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky signed and exchanged documents on grant assistance for the Maritime Safety and Security Capacity Enhancement Project in Dhaka on Tuesday.
According to the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka, the Japanese-built patrol vessel will strengthen the Coast Guard's capacity to combat maritime crimes and conduct search and rescue operations during natural disasters and other emergencies.
The agreement was signed during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Japan from October 26 to 29. It is expected to contribute to regional peace and stability while further strengthening the strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan.
