The High Court on Sunday dismissed a writ petition challenging the legality of the government notification banning the activities of the Bangladesh Awami League, saying the petition had not been properly raised.

An HC bench, led by Justice JBM Hassan, passed the order today.

Earlier, Munshiganj resident Md Al Amin filed the writ petition on September 7. Advocate Yunus Ali represented the petitioner.

The writ sought a rule asking why the notification issued on May 12, 2025, should not be declared to have been issued without lawful authority. The petitioner also sought a stay on the implementation of the notification while the rule remained pending.

On May 12 last year, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations until the trials of their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal are completed.

According to the notification, all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations-including publications, publicity through the mass media, online platforms and social media, processions, meetings, rallies and conferences-were prohibited until the completion of the trials of their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal.
