Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir has urged people to focus on Bangladesh’s interests rather than constantly thinking about India.
“Forget about India. India is a neighbouring country with which we want good bilateral relations. You cannot think only about India at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Think about your own country,” he told reporters at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday.
The adviser was responding to a question about a possible meeting with an Indian representative on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
He said Bangladesh would engage in bilateral or multilateral discussions with countries whenever necessary, but it was not possible to meet everyone on the sidelines of international forums.
“If we want to build a good relationship with someone, the first meeting should be bilateral, not at a multilateral forum,” he said.
Kabir said Bangladesh wanted to reset its relations with India and move away from the uncomfortable relationship it had maintained with the previous government over the past 15 years.
“We want to build a new relationship through bilateral discussions, not at a multilateral forum,” he said.
On border killings, the adviser said Bangladesh would raise its concerns with India at every level through diplomatic channels, in accordance with international law, border protocols and bilateral agreements.
He also said Bangladesh was reviewing all agreements signed with India through parliamentary scrutiny and review.
