Protecting democracy is our biggest responsibility: President

Protecting democracy is now the biggest task and responsibility, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday.
He made the remarks while addressing a civic reception at the Sylhet City Corporation premises in the afternoon.
The president said the country had created a democratic environment after a long struggle and sacrifices, including the loss of lives, and now had an opportunity to institutionalise democracy.
He said an election had been held and an internationally accepted government had been formed under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.
“The biggest task and responsibility now is to protect democracy,” Mirza Fakhrul said, stressing that both the ruling and opposition parties have a major role to play in maintaining the democratic system.
He said the parliament must be made functional and allowed to perform its duties properly. Differences on other issues could be resolved through dialogue and discussion, he added.
The president said the next struggle was to rebuild the country, strengthen democracy and create a liveable environment for future generations.
He urged everyone not to waste the opportunity to establish democracy, saying the people of Bangladesh had repeatedly struggled for democracy but faced obstacles.
Referring to various problems in Sylhet, Mirza Fakhrul said the ministers and lawmakers from the region were working on the issues.
He expressed hope that the ongoing initiatives would move forward and help fulfil the long-standing aspirations of the people of Sylhet.
