Ensure Women’s Safety on Trains

Letter To the Editor
Dear Sir,

Trains are an affordable and accessible means of transport in Bangladesh. Many women travel by train for education, employment, medical treatment and other essential purposes. However, sexual harassment and violence, particularly during night journeys, have raised serious concerns.

The recent rape of a woman on the Kurigram Express has further highlighted their vulnerability. According to Railway Police data, 10 incidents of rape at trains and railway stations have been recorded over the past five years. This demands immediate action.

The railway authorities should install CCTV cameras in every coach and ensure round-the-clock monitoring. More police and security personnel should be deployed, especially on night trains, with regular patrols. Swift investigation and exemplary punishment are also essential to deter offenders.

I hope the authorities will take effective measures to ensure women’s safety on trains.
