Gopalganj gets ready for a top-flight football return

 
GOPALGANJ, SEPT 17: Top-flight football is returning to Gopalganj after a three-year absence, bringing the Bangladesh Premier League back to a venue that has been waiting for another taste of the country's professional game.

The Gopalganj District Stadium will host around 20 matches from the Premier League and Federation Cup this season, with Brothers Union and Arambagh Krira Sangha using the venue as their home ground.

The return begins on Friday, when Brothers Union face City Club at 3pm. Preparations have already gathered pace at the stadium, with workers cleaning the galleries and putting the playing surface and surrounding areas in shape ahead of the opening fixture.

The return is more than a change of venue for the participating clubs. For Gopalganj, it brings competitive club football back to a district where opportunities to watch top-level domestic matches have been limited in recent years.

Local football organisers are hoping the extended schedule will help rebuild interest among spectators and give young players in the area a chance to watch professional football at close quarters.

S M Zahidul Haque Kochi, member secretary of the Gopalganj Sports Association, said preparations for Friday's match had been completed.

The stadium has been selected for both league and cup fixtures, meaning football will remain a regular feature of the venue rather than being limited to a single match.

The return also comes as the Bangladesh Football Federation is seeking to spread domestic competitions beyond Dhaka. Seven venues have been selected for the new domestic season, with Gopalganj among the grounds expected to host league and cup matches.

For the local audience, however, the significance is simpler: the floodlights, touchlines and stands of the district stadium are preparing to welcome professional football again.

The challenge will now be to turn that return into a lasting connection between top-level football and the local community.

If the scheduled matches draw regular crowds and the venue continues to receive quality fixtures, Gopalganj could become more than a temporary stop on the domestic football calendar.

After three years away, the game is finally coming back to town.
