Erdogan to seek another presidential term

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to run for another term with the next presidential election potentially being held in April 2028.

Erdogan’s political adviser Mehmet Ucum told private broadcaster NTV on Thursday that an early election could be held in April 2028 if 360 lawmakers support the move.

Under Turkish law, the election is scheduled for May that year. However, the 600-member parliament can call an early election if at least 360 lawmakers vote in favour.

Such an early election would open the way for Erdogan to seek another presidential term.

Erdogan’s AK Party and its coalition partner, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), currently control 326 parliamentary seats.

The government has previously said the election would be held on schedule. Its latest comments, however, suggest it is now considering an early vote.

Erdogan, 72, first came to power as prime minister in 2003. After serving three terms as prime minister, he became president in 2014.

Turkey later shifted from a parliamentary to a presidential system under Erdogan. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2023.

If the election is not brought forward, Erdogan will be constitutionally barred from seeking another term.

After winning the 2023 election, Erdogan said it would be his final presidential term. At the time, he asked voters to give him another chance to serve as president.
