Indonesia has received its first aircraft carrier, a 41-year-old former Italian Navy warship, which arrived at Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta on Friday.

The vessel, formerly known as ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, arrived at a naval base in Tanjung Priok on Friday morning and was welcomed with a military ceremony.

The Indonesian government says the carrier will strengthen the country’s maritime security and disaster response capabilities. It can operate helicopters and short take-off and vertical landing aircraft.

Italy agreed in March to give the retired carrier to Indonesia as part of efforts to expand defence ties between the two countries. Italy is also seeking to sell submarines and aircraft to Indonesia.

The transfer makes Indonesia the second country in Southeast Asia to operate an aircraft carrier. Thailand was the first, with its HTMS Chakri Naruebet commissioned in 1997 after being procured from Spain.

The Indonesian Navy has confirmed that the carrier will be named KRI Sriwijaya. It was previously announced that the vessel would be named KRI Gajah Mada.

The ship served in the Italian Navy from 1985 until its retirement in 2024. Indonesia acquired it through an intergovernmental grant arrangement.
