Govt wants fair trial over rights violations, fund misuse: Millat

NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA, Sept 18: The government wanted to address violations of people’s rights and alleged misappropriation of public funds during the Awami League regime through a fair judicial process, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat said on Friday.

“We want to resolve these issues through a fair trial and restore the rights of the people,” he said.

The minister made the remarks at a programme in Ratanpur Village of Ratanpur Union in Nabinagar Upazila, where he handed over the keys to a new house and the land deed to Golapi Begum, an elderly woman living in Shahbagh, Dhaka.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman provided the house as a gift to Golapi.

Millat also accused the previous government of looting the country’s resources for its own benefit.

“The previous fascist government looted everything in the country to fill its own coffers. But now they cannot enjoy the money they looted,” he said.

Referring to reports that Sheikh Hasina might return to Bangladesh by December 31, he said, “Why December 31? Come tomorrow. We will receive you through the legal process. There will be two handcuffs.”

He said those responsible for what he described as “inhuman acts” against the people would face trial in Bangladesh.
“We are waiting to hold this trial,” Millat said.

He added that the government had requested the neighbouring country to hand over Sheikh Hasina and her associates who had fled Bangladesh.

Brahmanbaria-3 MP Khaled Hossain Mahbub, Brahmanbaria-5 MP Md Abdul Mannan and District Council Administrator Sirajul Islam, among others, attended the programme.
