More rain likely as low may form in Bay

Rainfall may increase across Bangladesh next week as a low-pressure system is expected to form over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas within the next two days, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Meteorologist Md Omar Faruk said the system could intensify into a depression and eventually develop into a cyclone, although its likely track is towards Odisha.

“If the low-pressure system forms, it may intensify into a depression and could later develop into a cyclone,” Omar said on Friday.

“Its influence may increase rainfall in Bangladesh, particularly around Sept 23, 24 and 25.”

The forecast comes after several parts of the country received heavy rain in recent days. Tetulia in Panchagarh recorded the highest rainfall, 118mm, in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday. Aricha recorded 106mm, Narayanganj 93mm, Baghabari 61mm and Mongla 55mm. Dhaka received 11mm.

Fog has also appeared in parts of the country. Omar said it was linked to the recent rain and should clear within the next one or two days.
