Five burnt in petrol fire amid family dispute in Sutrapur

Five members of a family, including a woman, suffered serious burn injuries after petrol was allegedly poured inside a room and set on fire during a family dispute in Dhaka’s Sutrapur on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 4:30 PM in the Shyambazar Chamak Tuli area. The injured were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery later in the evening.

The injured were identified as Siddiq Bepari, 60, his son Md Imon, 26, who lives in Saudi Arabia, nephew Rajib, 38, and relatives Arifur Rahman Dhalu, 35, and Tania Akter, 20.

According to family sources, an argument took place on Friday between Tania and Imon’s sister Sultana over stagnant dirty water in front of their house. Sultana later informed Imon, who returned home from Saudi Arabia the same day.

Family members said Imon threatened to kill everyone during an argument on Saturday and then poured petrol inside his room and set it on fire. Those inside the room were injured in the fire.

Burn institute resident doctor Dr Sultan Mahmud said the five were brought to the hospital’s emergency department from Sutrapur in the evening.

Imon suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body, Tania 60 per cent, Siddiq 35 per cent, Rajib 15 per cent and Arifur 8 per cent. Imon, Tania, Siddiq and Rajib were shifted to the intensive care unit due to the extent of their injuries, while Arifur was kept under observation in the emergency department.
