Sutrapur tragedy: Saudi expat dies, four injured in petrol fire

A Saudi expatriate died and four others were injured after a room was set on fire using petrol following a family dispute in the capital's Sutrapur area.

The deceased, 25-year-old Emon, succumbed to his injuries at around 12:00 PM on Sunday (September 20) while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, resident physician Dr Sultan Mahmud confirmed.

On Saturday evening, five burn victims were rushed to the institute from the Sutrapur area. Doctors reported that Emon sustained 90 per cent burns, while Taniya suffered 60 per cent, Siddique 35 per cent, Rajib 15 per cent, and Arifur 8 per cent burn injuries.

Family sources said the relatives lived side by side on ancestral property in the Shyambazar Chamartuli area of Sutrapur. On Friday, an altercation broke out between Emon’s sister Sultana and Taniya over cleaning stagnant dirty water in front of the house, prompting Sultana to inform Emon, who subsequently returned home from Saudi Arabia.

Sonia Akter, wife of injured Arifur Rahman Dhalu, stated that Emon threatened to kill everyone before pouring petrol inside his room and setting it ablaze on Saturday afternoon. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing everyone in the room before locals rescued the victims and rushed them to the hospital.
