Police recovered the hanging body of Mosa Mariam Khatun, 19, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP GM Nazrul Islam, from the capital’s NAM Bhaban on Sunday night.
Her body was recovered from Flat No 203 on the third floor of Building No 5 at the NAM Bhaban under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan confirmed the matter to the media.
He said around 8:30pm that the body was still hanging when police reached the scene. Members of the CID forensic team had been called to the scene.
Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected MP from Satkhira-4 constituency for the third time in the 13th parliamentary election with the nomination of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Recently, a video showing a personal moment involving Nazrul and a young woman went viral on social media. He later said the woman was his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Following the incident, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party on July 22. The party also sent letters to the Speaker, the Election Commission and other relevant authorities seeking action against him.
On July 21, Obaidur Rahman, the personal driver of Gazi Nazrul, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, alleging that he had been beaten and subjected to an attempted strangulation after protesting against an alleged illicit relationship and expressing suspicions over a leaked video.
Gazi Nazrul Islam was granted an eight-week bail by the High Court in the case on August 10.
