Bangladesh sets 106.5 mmcfd gas production target by 2030

The government has set a target to add nearly 106.5 million cubic feet of gas daily (mmcfd) to the national grid by 2030 through drilling six new wells and completing inspection on eight suspended wells.

State-owned Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) is actively executing the initiative as part of the government's broader plan to drill 150 wells across the country. BGFCL General Manager Engineer Ashraful Alam said on Sunday (September 20) that the company is currently implementing five projects to meet rising energy demands.

Under a separate phase, BGFCL expects to supply an additional 126 mmcfd of gas daily by drilling nine new wells and performing workovers on 12 existing ones.

Under the long-term master plan, BGFCL targets producing approximately 235 mmcfd of gas daily from 19 wells by 2035.

Currently, BGFCL operates six gas fields: Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna, and Kamta. The state-owned entity supplies approximately 30 per cent of the country's domestic gas production and nearly 18 per cent of Bangladesh's overall gas supply.

To identify prospective structures for future exploration, BGFCL is conducting 3D seismic surveys over 1,450 square kilometers, including 875 sq km in Habiganj and 575 sq km across Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, and Meghna. Additional 2D and 3D seismic surveys covering 632 sq km are underway in the north-western area of Titas and north-eastern area of Narsingdi.

Under a project titled "Drilling of four appraisal-cum-development wells in Titas and Kamta fields," drilling of the Titas-28 well began on December 15, 2025, and concluded on June 19, 2026. The well was officially inaugurated for the national grid yesterday, contributing 12.5 mmcfd of gas daily.

Chinese firm CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited (CCDC) executed the drilling under a turnkey contract signed on April 10, 2025, reaching a measured depth of 3,601 metres and a true vertical depth of 3,471 metres. Furthermore, BGFCL is conducting deep exploration drilling at Titas-31 and Titas-29 to extract additional gas reserves.
