Online VAT returns made mandatory for 11 sectors

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has made online submission of VAT returns mandatory for 11 sectors, including cigarettes, medicines, mobile phones and banking services.
The NBR’s VAT wing issued the order on Sunday, making online submission through the eVAT portal compulsory for manufacturers in the listed product sectors and service providers in the relevant service sectors.
The sectors are cigarettes, mobile phones, MS products, medicines, beverages, cement, tiles, paints and varnishes, insurance, banking and non-banking financial services, and mobile financial services.
The order was issued under Section 64(5) of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012, and Rule 118(a) of the VAT and Supplementary Duty Rules, 2016.
It said the requirement would also apply to registered entities that provide other goods or services alongside those listed in the order.
Any previous NBR orders making online VAT return submission mandatory will be considered cancelled after this order comes into effect.
The NBR may add or remove sectors from the list at any time, according to the order, which takes immediate effect.
