Goalless draw ends Bangladesh women's football campaign

Bangladesh's women's football team ended their Asian Games campaign without a victory after being held to a goalless draw by Myanmar in their final Group F match at Nagai Stadium in Osaka on Monday.

The stalemate left both sides with one point from three matches, bringing the curtain down on their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals. Bangladesh finished the tournament without scoring a goal, while conceding 16 in their opening two matches.

Bangladesh had entered the final fixture with hopes of securing a victory and keeping alive their outside chance of progressing as one of the two best third-placed teams. Head coach Peter Butler had spoken of Myanmar match in which his side could compete for a positive result.

But the contest proved a cagey affair, with neither attack able to break the deadlock.

Bangladesh enjoyed slightly more possession, but struggled to translate territorial control into meaningful chances. Myanmar, meanwhile, carried the greater threat in front of goal, although Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma produced important saves to preserve the clean sheet. Bangladesh managed only three shots, none on target, while Myanmar registered eight attempts, with two testing the goalkeeper.

For Bangladesh, it was a stark contrast to the opening two matches. They were overwhelmed 10-0 by North Korea before South Korea inflicted another heavy 6-0 defeat.

Myanmar had also suffered emphatic defeats, losing 5-0 to South Korea and 8-0 to North Korea.

The goalless draw therefore saw both teams bow out with a solitary point and without finding the net in any of their three group matches. For Bangladesh, their second Asian Games appearance ends with one draw and two defeats, a campaign that began under the shadow of daunting opposition and concluded with a hard-earned clean sheet, but no victory.
