3 held over crude bomb blasts at Kamalapur station, SC main gate

Police have arrested three people over separate cocktail explosions at the Supreme Court and Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka who they say is also a leader of the banned Chhatra League.

Two suspects, Sakhawat Hossain Raihan, 32, and Saimun, 23, were arrested for their alleged direct involvement in two consecutive cocktail blasts at Platform No-2 of Kamalapur Railway Station on September 19, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel Division) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid disclosed the arrests at a press briefing on Monday. The blasts occurred around 10:37pm between pillars 29 and 30.

He said that Raihan, an electrician at Kamalapur Railway Station, was reportedly a former organisational secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Shahjahanpur unit, while Saimun was reportedly an active Jubo League worker in the area.

In a separate case, DMP’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested Md Salman Islam Sakib alias Asif, 23, over a crude bomb blast in front of the Supreme Court’s main gate on September 15.

Confirming the matter, DMP’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Niaz Mehedi said that two people arrived on a motorcycle and detonated the bomb before fleeing. The motorcycle was seized from Sakib. 
Four unexploded cocktail-like objects were later recovered from the Hazaribagh Beribadh area based on information obtained during his interrogation.

Sakib was reportedly a former joint general secretary of the banned Chhatra League’s Motijheel unit. 

Police said efforts were continuing to arrest other suspects in both cases.
