Gazi Nazrul’s first wife sent to Jail after remand

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Maksuda Islam, first wife of MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail after a one-day remand in a case filed over the alleged abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after DB investigators produced Maksuda before the court and sought her detention.

The investigation officer said important information related to the case had been obtained during questioning. No bail petition was filed on her behalf.

Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday evening. Later that night, Nazrul and Maksuda were taken into custody.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed the case against Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman, alleging that she had been subjected to physical and mental abuse.

The court earlier granted Nazrul four days’ remand and Maksuda one day. The DB later took over the investigation.
