Former CUET VC Sayem returns to campus amid student protests

Former Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem returned to the campus on Tuesday as students continued protests demanding his reinstatement.

Prof Sayem entered the campus in his private car around noon, with students welcoming him by chanting “Sayem Sir, Sayem Sir”.

He arrived at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram from Dhaka by air in the morning and went directly to the CUET campus.

CUET Director of Student Welfare Prof Dr Mohammad Saiful Islam said Prof Sayem had returned to the campus. He said students were protesting to demand his reinstatement, while the teachers’ association had also issued a statement supporting the demand.

However, the administration had not yet been informed about when the newly appointed vice-chancellor would come to the campus, he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, students staged a protest at the university’s main gate from the morning and eventually locked the gate. They continued their demonstration despite the rain.

Sakib Hasan, a fourth-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said Prof Sayem had been removed from his post without being given any prior show-cause notice.

“Our protest programme has been continuing since Monday night. As part of it, we have announced a campus shutdown today. Our programme will continue until our demands are met,” he said.

Students began protesting after news spread on Monday night that Prof Sayem had been removed as CUET vice-chancellor. They also protested against the decision to appoint KUET Prof Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam as the new CUET vice-chancellor.

The students later locked the vice-chancellor’s building and announced a shutdown of all academic and administrative activities at the university until further notice.
