Women's NCL widens the pool in search of a more balanced Competition

The Women's National Cricket League is preparing to open its doors to a larger group of players this season, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board increasing participation and introducing a selection process designed to make the teams more competitive.

The T20 competition will begin on October 28 at Cox's Bazar International Cricket Stadium, with the player selection process scheduled for September 26.

More than 160 players are expected to take part this season, compared with around 120 previously. The expansion is intended to give more cricketers an opportunity to play competitive domestic T20 cricket while reducing the imbalance between the divisional teams.

Instead of allowing players to be selected only on the basis of their divisional identity, the BCB is introducing a draft-style selection process. Each division will have two icon players, while divisional representatives will select batters and bowlers from a wider pool.

The selection lists have been prepared using performances from previous NCL seasons, Premier Division cricket and the BCB Women's Cup. Divisions can also identify players they believe have been missed from the initial lists.

The change follows concerns over team balance in the previous competition. A divisional structure can give local players an obvious route into a team, but an overly rigid system can also leave strong performers without enough opportunity if their division already has a large pool of players.

The BCB is therefore trying to strike a different balance this season: retaining the divisional identity of the competition while allowing teams to recruit players who can strengthen their combinations.

The tournament will also have a longer window this year. Instead of last season's 10-day schedule, the 28-match competition is expected to run for 18 to 19 days, giving each team seven round-robin matches.

For Bangladesh women's cricket, the changes offer more than additional games. A larger and more evenly distributed playing group should give selectors a broader view of domestic talent and create more competition for places in the national setup.
