Road mishaps kill 7 in three districts

Seven people were killed and at least 22 injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj and Sirajganj districts and Sreemangal Upazila of Moulvibazar District in two days.

GOPALGANJ: Two people were killed and at least 20 others injured when a Dhaka-bound Dola Paribahan bus collided head-on with a private car on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Kashiani Upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 12:30 pm near Shibgati Stand, police and local residents said. The private car was wrecked and the bus plunged into a roadside ditch. The identities of the two people killed were not immediately known.

The injured were taken to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex, Gopalganj District Hospital and Faridpur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhanga Highway Police Station (PS) Md Helal Uddin confirmed the accident.

On the other hand, a 50-year-old pedestrian was killed after being caught in a collision between a bus and a container truck on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Muksudpur Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

Police said the Dhaka-bound Welcome Paribahan bus collided head-on with an unidentified container truck near the Gerakhola Bridge. The pedestrian, Akram Biswas of Salinaboksa Village, was critically injured and died on the way to Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex.

Muksudpur PS OC Abdullah-Al-Mamun confirmed the death and said legal proceedings were underway.

SIRAJGANJ: A 52-year-on passenger was killed and two others were seriously injured after a speeding bus rammed a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw from behind on the Bogura-Nagarbari highway on Wednesday afternoon.

Deceased Mostafizur Rahman was the son of late Khoda Box Molla from Ataikula Upazila of Pabna District.

Hatikumrul Highway PS OC Mahbubur Rahman said a Pabna-bound “Al Amin” bus lost control and hit the auto-rickshaw around 12 pm in the Baghabari Dakkshinpara area, crushing it against an ahead-moving covered van. Rahman died on the spot. 

Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to a hospital in Pabna’s Bera Upazila. Police have seized the bus, though the driver and helper fled the scene.

SREEMANGAL, MOULVIBAZAR: Three people were killed on Tuesday night in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw near the Satgaon Highway Police Station (PS) in the Lachna area of Sreemangal Upazila of the district.

According to police and witnesses, the collision happened when an Alam Asia transport bus travelling from Sreemangal to Mirpur smashed into the oncoming auto-rickshaw, leaving three seriously injured. Locals rushed the injured to the Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex, where emergency medical officers declared them dead on arrival.

Authorities have identified only one of the victims as Joy Singh, 23, son of Amrit Singh from the Majdihi area of Bhairabganj Bazar in Sreemangal. The identities of the other two victims remain unconfirmed.

Satgaon Highway PS OC Abdul Momin confirmed that the bus has been seized, and the bodies will be sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for autopsies. Police are currently working to identify the remaining two victims.
