Italy bans burqa, limits foreign students

Italy’s government has approved a decree banning burqas and niqabs in schools while limiting the number of students with inadequate Italian-language skills to 30% per class.

The measures, approved by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet on Thursday (September 24), are part of a broader package aimed at school integration. Students who do not have sufficient Italian proficiency will be subject to the 30% classroom cap.

The decree also provides for stronger Italian-language support. Parents of children facing serious integration difficulties may be required to attend Italian-language courses, with fines of up to €1,000 for non-compliance under the draft provisions.

Meloni said the measures were intended to promote integration while maintaining rules in the education system.
