LPG unavailable at government-set price

A 12kg LPG cylinder is officially priced at Tk 1,585, but consumers are paying Tk 2,100–2,200 in the market, with many still struggling to find the product even at the higher price.

Dealers say they are being forced to buy LPG from suppliers at higher prices because of inadequate supply. LPG companies, however, say the cost of raw materials and shipping has increased amid the Middle East crisis, causing supply shortages.

About 80 per cent of the country’s LPG is used for cooking. Demand has increased further as consumers face shortages of piped gas in households.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) set the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder at Tk 1,585 for September. However, cylinders are selling for more than Tk 2,100, forcing consumers to pay nearly Tk 600 extra.

LPG dealers said Bashundhara, Sun, Delta, iGas and G-Gas were not taking new cylinder orders this month. Omera and Fresh are accepting orders but taking three to seven days to make deliveries.

As a result, supply remains about 30 per cent below regular demand, according to dealers.

Meghna Fresh LPG Chief Marketing Officer Abu Sayeed Raza said the import cost of LPG had increased amid the Middle East crisis.

“Since the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, shipping and other related costs have more than doubled,” he said.

Analysts said resolving the global energy crisis was essential to stabilise the domestic market. They also called for regular monitoring of the market and LPG plants to prevent manipulation by unscrupulous traders.
