Bangladesh’s ‘Pankouri’ selected for Nepal film festival

Bangladeshi documentary Pankouri has been officially selected for the 1st Lumbini International Film Festival 2026 in Nepal.

The three-day festival will be held in Tansen, Palpa, from October 8 to 10. Director Zafar Muhammad has been invited by the festival authorities.

The 18-minute-17-second documentary tells the story of the Karatoya River in Panchagarh and the lives and memories of people connected to it. It focuses on Mujibur Rahman, who spent 55 years collecting stones from the river.

The film was shot between 2019 and 2025. Mujibur Rahman, its central character, died while the film was in post-production.

Pankouri has previously received Best Documentary awards at the Our Films Shorts Fest 2025 and Chattogram International Documentary Festival 2025. It was also selected for the Kolkata People’s Film Festival and Kerala Short Film Festival in 2026.

The Karatoya is a transboundary river shared by Bangladesh and India. The documentary explores how lives, livelihoods and memories connected to the river have changed over time.
