Journalist freed after 13 days in Israeli detention

Palestinian-American journalist Naqaa Hamed has been released after nearly two weeks in Israeli detention, following a decision by the Salem Military Court.

Hamed was detained on September 15 at a temporary Israeli checkpoint near Tuqu, southeast of Bethlehem, while returning from a reporting assignment. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), she was separated from her camera crew and questioned about her reporting and journalistic work.

She was held at Damon Prison and released on Monday, according to reports. Press TV, where Hamed works as a West Bank correspondent, said she had been detained without formal charges.

Israeli authorities said Hamed was being investigated over alleged cooperation with an “enemy entity”, while Israeli police also cited allegations including trading with the enemy, incitement and support for Iran. CPJ said the authorities had not publicly provided evidence for the espionage allegations.

Hamed is also a freelance journalist with 4D Media and had been returning from an assignment for Turkish broadcaster TRT when she was detained, according to CPJ.
