Hasina, 115 others charged in three July uprising cases

Police have submitted charge sheets against 116 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with two murder cases and one attempted murder case dating to the July 2024 uprising.

Investigating officers recommended the discharge of 303 people named in the initial reports as no evidence of their involvement was found during the probe.

The charge sheets cover three separate cases: 43 accused in the murder of electrician Ilias Hossain, 49 in the murder of courier service worker Raihan Akon, and 24 in the attempted murder of auto-rickshaw driver Mehedi Hasan.

Sheikh Hasina is named as a principal accused across all three charge sheets. Other prominent figures charged include former Bridges Minister and General Secretary of the banned Awami League Obaidul Quader, alongside former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

Ilias Hossain Murder Case

Electrician Ilias Hossain sustained gunshot wounds on August 4, 2024, in front of the Allah Karim Mosque in Mohammadpur during the mass demonstrations. He died five days later on August 9 while undergoing treatment.

His father, Farooq Khan, filed a case on September 28, 2024, naming 102 individuals alongside 300 unidentified suspects. On September 30, Sub-Inspector (SI) Akkel Ali of Mohammadpur Police Station submitted a charge sheet implicating 43 people while recommending the discharge of 66 original suspects.

Key figures named in the charge sheet include Sheikh Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, and Awami League Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak.

Former lawmakers Sadeq Khan, Mainul Hossain Khan Akhil, and AKM Sarwar Jahan Badsha were also charged, along with former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid, former Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Huq has set November 16 for the hearing on this matter, prosecution sources confirmed.

Raihan Akon Murder Case

Raihan Akon, a loader at the Banasree branch of Sundarban Courier Service, was shot on August 5, 2024, near the Badda Y-loop area. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 4:00 PM that afternoon.

His father, Kamal Hossain, filed a case on April 28, 2025, naming 236 people. Following the investigation, SI Suman Miah of Badda Police Station submitted a charge sheet on September 27 charging 49 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, and former MP Shamim Shahnewaz, while recommending the discharge of 236 people.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam scheduled a hearing on the case for Sunday.

Mehedi Hasan Attempted Murder Case

Auto-rickshaw driver Mehedi Hasan was shot and injured near the Mayurbhilla area in Mohammadpur on August 4, 2024. A bullet passed through his right arm during the violence, and he was subsequently treated at Sikder Medical College Hospital.

Following a case filed on September 8, 2024, SI Selim Uddin of Mohammadpur Police Station submitted a charge sheet on September 20 implicating 24 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and Sadeq Khan, while recommending the discharge of one individual.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Huq scheduled the hearing for the case for Sunday.
