A court placed Abu Bakar Siddique on a seven-day remand for interrogation under the Anti-Terrorism Act over an incisive Facebook comment suggesting a sniper attack on a bus used by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his visit to Rajshahi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Huq passed the remand order on Sunday (October 25) following a hearing, confirmed state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman.

Investigation officer Sub-Inspector Yasin Paik of the Detective Branch (DB) produced the accused in court and sought a seven-day remand. The petition stated that intensive interrogation was necessary to uncover information regarding unknown co-conspirators involved in provoking an attack on the head of state and undermining national integrity and public security.

Remand grounds submitted to the court emphasized identifying and arresting potential conspirators aiming to attempt an assassination on the head of government, verifying the involvement of any organized terrorist group or arms supply network, and recovering additional digital evidence or devices.

According to the case documents, DB Cyber and Special Crime (North) Division's Organized Crime Investigation Team spotted a post on October 21 on a Facebook group named 'THE BEAUTY OF RAJSHAHI'. The post featured a photo of a Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) bus carrying the Prime Minister.

Under the post, a user named 'MD Abu Bokor Siddique' commented: "What a great opportunity it was, if only there had been a sniper".

Following the provocative comment, DB police used technological tracking to locate the suspect. A joint team of DB and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police conducted a raid at 5:00 PM on October 21 at a residence in Ghol Haria Dakkhinpara under Paba Police Station in Rajshahi, detaining Siddique and his father, Md Aynal Huq.

Officers seized a smartphone from Siddique during the operation. During initial questioning, Siddique confessed to making the comment from his Facebook account, while his father was released into family custody after preliminary verification confirmed he had no involvement in or knowledge of the social media activity.

Sub-Inspector Md Manik Hossain of the Organized Crime Investigation Team filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Ramna Model Police Station in Dhaka.
