Malaysia begins repatriating 1,500 Myanmar nationals

Malaysia began repatriating around 1,500 Myanmar nationals on Tuesday as the first phase of a wider programme that could see up to 5,000 people returned to Myanmar.

The Malaysian government says the returns are voluntary. The first group includes 1,476 people identified by the Myanmar government, according to the Malaysian Home Ministry.

Buses carrying the returnees arrived at a stadium near the Lumut naval base before they were taken to a port, where Myanmar naval vessels and a hospital ship were docked.

The UN and human rights groups have raised concerns over the safety of those being returned amid Myanmar’s ongoing civil war. The UNHCR has said current conditions do not support the safe and sustainable return of refugees.

Malaysia hosts around 193,000 registered refugees from Myanmar, about two-thirds of whom are Rohingya. It remains unclear whether any Rohingya were among those returned on Tuesday.
