50 killed in airstrike near Bangladesh border, UN alarmed

At least 50 people were killed and 58 injured in a Myanmar military airstrike in Rakhine State near the Bangladesh border, prompting concern from the United Nations.
The airstrike took place on Monday near a market in Kyauktaw township, where more than 200 shops serve several communities, including Rakhine, Rohingya, Hindu and Daingnet people, according to the UN.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attack and called on all parties to immediately end the violence, protect civilians and comply with international law. He also called for those responsible to be held accountable.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the continuing violence in Rakhine showed that conditions did not currently exist for the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of refugees and other displaced people, including Rohingya.
The Arakan Army reported that 50 people were killed and 58 injured in the attack. A local aid worker also confirmed the death toll, according to Reuters.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said the attack raised serious concerns about respect for international humanitarian law. He said civilians in Rakhine continued to face grave risks amid the ongoing conflict.
The latest attack comes amid continuing conflict in Myanmar following the military coup in 2021. The UN has repeatedly warned that the situation in Rakhine remains unsafe for the return of Rohingya refugees.
