Former spokesperson of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Umama Fatema has said there is “no difference” between Jamaat-e-Islami and the Awami League.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, she expressed concerns over the leadership of the July movement, the rise of political figures and the role of social media in shaping public opinion.
Umama alleged that people linked to certain student groups were included in the movement’s coordinator committee while other student organisations were excluded. She also criticised what she described as attempts to control the spontaneous nature of the July movement.
She expressed concern over social media manipulation, alleging that various interest groups use online platforms to create “manufactured consent” and promote certain figures among young people.
Referring to Myanmar, she warned that social media could be used as an effective tool for political manipulation, citing its reported role in the Rohingya crisis.
Umama also criticised the political disengagement of the middle class and said the country’s political space was increasingly being controlled by “a group of hypocrites.”
Towards the end of her post, she reiterated that she sees no difference between Jamaat and the Awami League, alleging that Jamaat would go to any extent to cover what she called its “genocide stain.”
