Dear Sir,
Every day, millions of people travel across Dhaka for their livelihoods. Unfortunately, reckless overtaking by public buses has become a serious threat to their safety. In their race to pick up more passengers or reach destinations ahead of competitors, many drivers ignore traffic rules and overtake dangerously.
The situation becomes more alarming during office hours, when the roads are busiest. Sudden lane changes, high-speed overtaking and stopping before designated bus stops have become common. These practices not only worsen traffic congestion but also contribute to preventable road accidents, causing injuries and, in some cases, deaths.
Addressing the problem requires more than strict enforcement of traffic laws. Professional driver training, regular monitoring and visible penalties for violations are equally essential. A disciplined public transport system can improve road safety and restore commuters’ confidence. I therefore urge the authorities to take prompt and effective measures to curb reckless overtaking and make Dhaka’s roads safer.
