BRAC University gets bomb threat, probe on

An unidentified email has threatened a bomb attack on BRAC University in Dhaka, claiming that multiple bombs would be detonated on Tuesday around 11:00am.

The threat was sent at 6:44pm on Sunday from an email account identified as “Typical Chinese Man”. It targeted the university on Pragati Sarani in the capital.

The university authorities informed law enforcement agencies and forwarded the email to the relevant authorities for precautionary measures. Several intelligence agencies are reportedly investigating the matter.

In a statement, BRAC University’s Public Relations Department said it had received an anonymous email containing the threat and was treating it with the utmost seriousness.

“The matter has already been reported to the law enforcement agencies, and we are receiving all necessary assistance from them,” it said.

The university said the safety and security of students, teachers, officers and staff remained its highest priority.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Khan said the university authorities had filed a general diary (GD) with Badda Police Station over the threat.
“The matter is being investigated by the Detective Branch’s Cyber Unit,” he said.

However, the police official said there was no reason to panic, adding that the threat did not appear to have any credible basis and was not being considered a potential attack at this stage.
