India has stepped up efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar saying New Delhi is holding discussions with both sides on maritime security, energy supplies and ways to reduce hostilities.
Jaishankar made the remarks at a conference, saying India has become more directly involved in efforts to resolve the conflict in recent months rather than limiting itself to statements.
He said India is discussing the safety of maritime navigation in the Black Sea, energy supplies and possible "non-aggression" arrangements with both Russia and Ukraine.
Jaishankar said there is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy to end the war.
Since the conflict began, India has called for a ceasefire but has refrained from directly criticising Moscow. New Delhi has also abstained from several UN votes condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine.
In late August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan and called for an end to the conflict.
Jaishankar also said India's longstanding ties with Russia have expanded over the years, with cooperation now covering areas including energy, space and trade.
Modi also met Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in September, where the two leaders pledged to further deepen India-Russia ties. The meeting came amid US pressure on New Delhi to distance itself from Moscow, particularly over Russian oil imports.
India's imports of Russian oil declined somewhat during the Middle East conflict but later increased again. Russia also remains one of India's major defence suppliers, with the Indian military operating hundreds of Russian-made fighter aircraft and several S-400 air defence systems.
