The opposition Democratic Party has secured control of the United States Senate, the upper house of Congress, following key victories in the midterm elections, reports The New York Times citing unofficial results.
Control of the 100-seat Senate requires a party to secure at least 51 seats. Elections were held for 35 Senate seats during these midterms.
Unofficial election returns indicate that Democratic candidates have won 15 of these 35 contested seats, bringing the party's total count in the upper chamber to 52 seats and confirming a Democratic majority.
The party's seat tally is expected to increase further, as Democratic candidates maintain leads in three additional contested races where vote counting remains underway.
