The bodies of former union parishad chairman Selim Khan and his son, film actor Shanto Khan, who were killed in a mob beating during the July uprising, were exhumed on Wednesday morning for post-mortem examinations following a court order.
Selim Khan's body was first exhumed at a graveyard in the Laxmipur union area of Chandpur Sadar upazila. His son Shanto’s body was exhumed shortly afterwards.
Executive Magistrate Protyay Hashem and investigation officer Chand Mia were present during the exhumation.
Earlier, Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Foyez Ahmed told media that police had sought the appointment of an executive magistrate from the district administration after the court ordered the exhumation for autopsies. The district administration approved the request, paving the way for the process on Wednesday.
Selim Khan was the chairman of Laxmipur Model Union Parishad and president of the local Awami League unit. He was also the owner of film production and distribution company Shapla Media.
His son Shanto Khan had acted in several films.
During the previous government’s tenure, Selim Khan faced allegations of amassing huge wealth through illegal sand extraction from the Padma-Meghna river system in Chandpur. He also came under scrutiny over alleged irregularities in land acquisition for Chandpur Science and Technology University, earning him the widely used moniker 'sand-grabbing chairman.'
He had also faced several cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission and over alleged tax evasion, and had previously been jailed, according to the report.
On August 5, 2024, the day Sheikh Hasina’s government fell, Selim Khan and Shanto Khan were killed in a mob attack while allegedly attempting to leave the area.
Police later filed a case with Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station. The court subsequently ordered the exhumation and autopsies as part of the investigation and legal proceedings into the deaths.
