Indian authorities have tightened security across the capital ahead of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday, with 23,000 central armed police personnel deployed, 61 trains cancelled and services suspended at 57 metro stations.
The party plans to gather at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, police have denied permission for the demonstration, citing a failure to apply at least 10 days in advance and alleged violations of rules during previous protests.
Despite the denial, authorities fear that demonstrators may gather at sensitive locations across central Delhi. Restrictions have been imposed in parts of the area under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), according to Indian media outlet NDTV on Friday, October 9.
The restrictions prohibit certain gatherings and activities, with violators liable to face legal action.
As a precautionary measure, 57 metro stations in Delhi were closed from Friday, preventing passengers from entering or exiting the stations, authorities said.
Indian Railways has also cancelled 61 train services scheduled to operate on Friday and Saturday to and from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations. Of these, 40 trains were cancelled on Friday and another 21 were scheduled to be cancelled on Saturday.
Meanwhile, 23,000 personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed across the capital to maintain law and order and prevent any potential escalation.
Authorities remain on alert as the planned demonstration approaches, amid concerns over possible disruptions to public transport and security in central Delhi.
