A massive human chain was held at the Satkhira New Market premises, demanding the arrest of the accused in the Zakaria murder case.
Presided over by Advocate Azad Hossain Belal, adviser to the Zakaria Murder Justice Implementation Committee, and moderated by Member Secretary Sheikh Masum Billah Shahin, the event featured speeches by Joint Conveners Professor Nur Mohammad Par, Abul Kasem, Advocate Akbar Hossain, Advocate Shafiqul Islam, Mashiur Rahman, and Kamruzzaman Russell; student leaders Sheikh Abu Raihan, Md. Nurunnabi, and Al Imran Imu; and labour leaders Aziz Babu, Nawabjan, and Oziar Rahman, among others.
The speakers noted that nearly a week and a half had passed since Zakaria’s murder, yet the police’s efforts to arrest the accused had been disappointing. They further added that while the prime suspect, Nahid, had been arrested, the police deserved little credit for this particular action. As such, they urged the police to prove their competence by immediately arresting the remaining suspects; otherwise, a vigorous movement would be launched on the streets with the participation of the entire district’s population.
Notably, on the night of Friday, October 2, at around 11:30PM, a dispute arose between members of a teenage gang, including Nahid, and Bappi Hasan, the nephew of Rabiul Islam, owner of a tea stall located near the main gate of the District Livestock Officer’s office. College student Zakaria was stabbed by Nahid while attempting to save Bappi Hasan. He later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother, Shahariar Khan, filed a murder case at Satkhira Sadar Police Station on Saturday night, naming 12 individuals and accusing seven unidentified persons. Police have already arrested three individuals, including the prime suspect, in connection with the case.
