A Bangladeshi man was injured in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Jamalpur border in Kushtia's Daulatpur upazila on Saturday, prompting the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to fire three warning shots.

The incident occurred around 9:30 AM near the Mathabhanga River while the man was fishing. A Bangladeshi national was also detained by the BGB after being caught by local farmers near the border.

According to BGB and local sources, Sahajul, 30, son of Sahabaz and a resident of Jamalpur village in the upazila, went fishing in the river on Saturday morning. He reportedly got into an argument with an Indian national near the border, which escalated into a physical altercation.

Following the incident, BSF members allegedly fired a round of pellet shots at Sahajul, leaving pellets embedded in his legs and other parts of his body. Local residents later rescued him.

Meanwhile, angered by the incident, Bangladeshi farmers working in fields near the border caught an Indian national and handed him over to the BGB.

In response to the BSF firing, BGB personnel deployed along the border fired three rounds into the air as a precautionary measure. Tension briefly prevailed in the area, but the situation has since returned to normal, according to the BGB.

Lieutenant Colonel Rashed Kamal Roni, commander of Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB), confirmed the incident, saying a strong protest had been lodged over the BSF firing and that the BGB had taken firm steps to control the situation.

He added that procedures were under way in accordance with border protocols and the law regarding the firing and the detained Indian national. A flag meeting with the BSF has also been requested.

The situation along the border remains under the BGB's control, he said.
