President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has paid tribute to Toufique Imrose Khalidi, the late editor-in-chief of bdnews24.com, whose career marked several milestones in Bangladesh's journalism.

Brig Gen Mohammad Raisul Islam, assistant military secretary to the president, placed a wreath on behalf of the head of state and signed the condolence book at Banani Old DOHS Playground on Saturday.

Khalidi’s remains were brought to the playground at 2:30PM, where friends, family members, colleagues, well-wishers and representatives from different sections of society gathered to pay their final respects.

His funeral prayers were held at the venue at around 3:30PM. He is scheduled to be buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard at 5PM.

Khalidi fell ill suddenly on the night of October 1 while visiting London on a personal trip. He was taken to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain haemorrhage. He was pronounced dead at 2:23PM local time the following day.

His coffin arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday morning aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.

Before his remains were repatriated to Bangladesh, a funeral prayer was held at Brick Lane Mosque in East London after Zuhr prayers on October 8. Former colleagues and members of the local Bangladeshi community attended the prayer to pay their final respects.
