Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has called for equal opportunities for women in education, employment, economic independence and leadership.
She made the remarks at a women’s leadership seminar at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Thursday (November 5), organised by AmCham Bangladesh and the US Embassy.
Zubaida said women's progress should be measured not only by their presence in top positions but also by the opportunities available to others to follow them.
Citing 2025 ILO data, she said women's participation in Bangladesh's labour force stood at 38.6 per cent, compared to 80.4 per cent for men.
She stressed the need for better education, healthcare, daycare facilities and workplace opportunities to ensure women's economic independence and professional growth.
She also highlighted government plans to recruit 100,000 health workers, 80 per cent of whom would be women, and 25,000 professional midwives.
