BNP Standing Committee member Amanullah Aman on Saturday warned that defeated forces were conspiring to disrupt the country's progress and urged party leaders and activists to remain united under Tarique Rahman's leadership.

He said the country was moving forward under Tarique Rahman's leadership, following the uncompromising political path of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Aman made the remarks while presiding over a memorial meeting organised by the Shaheed Jihad Smriti Parishad to mark the anti-autocracy movement of 1990.

Recalling the mass uprising, Aman said the death of Shaheed Jihad during the anti-autocracy movement united students and strengthened the struggle against the then autocratic regime.

He said the All-Party Student Action Committee, formed by 22 student organisations at Dhaka University, played a key role in mobilising students. Under the uncompromising leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia, the movement eventually led to the fall of the autocratic government.

Aman, a former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), said the Zia family had always taken a leading role in street movements during critical periods in the country's history.

He said Tarique Rahman had faced persecution and other adversities but remained committed to the people. He also credited him with turning the political movement into a one-point demand that ultimately led to the fall of what he called the fascist regime.

Referring to the current government, Aman said it was running the country on the basis of public votes and trust. He mentioned initiatives such as family cards, support for farmers and assistance for religious institutions as examples of the government's efforts.

He said while the country's achievements were receiving international recognition, followers of the previous regime were allegedly trying to hatch conspiracies in secret.

There was no longer any scope for anyone to come to power through unconstitutional means or conspiracies, he said.
Aman urged BNP leaders and activists at all levels to remain united, organised and alert to ensure that the country's progress continued.

The meeting was presided over by Amanullah Aman, president of the Shaheed Jihad Smriti Parishad, and jointly moderated by former general secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon and former assistant general secretary Nazim Uddin Alam.

BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed attended the meeting as the chief guest.

Other attendees included MP Mostafizur Rahman Babul, president of the All-Party Student Action Council of 1990; BNP Chairperson's Adviser Habibur Rahman Habib; MP Shirin Sultana, former vice-president of Begum Rokeya Hall; Mir Sarafat Ali Safu, former vice-president of Dhaka College and BNP secretary for volunteer affairs; and Saif Mahmud Jewel, former general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, among others.
