Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has rejected the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling the move unconstitutional and announcing plans to continue its protest movement.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said on Sunday (October 11) that the federal government’s decision undermined provincial autonomy and the democratic mandate of the people. He said the party would challenge the measures through constitutional, legal and democratic forums.
The federal government imposed emergency and governor’s rule in the northwestern province after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the cabinet’s recommendations, citing worsening security conditions and alleged shortcomings in the provincial government’s counterterrorism efforts.
PTI argued that the measures would not resolve the security crisis and warned that curtailing provincial authority could deepen political tensions. The party maintained that counterterrorism efforts required cooperation between federal and provincial authorities.
The development comes amid PTI’s protest campaign demanding the release of its jailed founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The party has vowed to continue its political resistance against the federal government’s decision.
