Water Resources Minister Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Sunday said that, practising non-violence is crucial to establishing peace, harmony and human values across the world.

He said disputes should be resolved through tolerance, mutual respect and dialogue. The ideals of Mahatma Gandhi remain relevant to building a peaceful and discrimination-free world, he added.

The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion and cultural programme marking the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the International Day of Non-Violence at the Liberation War Museum auditorium in the capital.

The programme was organised by the Gandhi Ashram Trust.

Anee said Mahatma Gandhi led movements for peace, harmony and non-violence. He struggled to establish a peaceful, harmonious and communal-harmony-based society.

Following Gandhi’s ideals, everyone should work together to eliminate violence, hatred and division from society, the minister said.

He also stressed the importance of peaceful cooperation and mutual understanding in achieving sustainable development and protecting the environment.

Cooperation should be strengthened in areas of common interest, including river and water resources management, he said.

The minister called for spreading the practice of non-violence at every level of family, society and the state to build a safe, peaceful and liveable world for future generations.

Special guest Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon called on people to play responsible roles in promoting human welfare, social harmony and world peace by drawing lessons from Gandhi’s life and ideals.

Major General (retd) Jiban Kanai Das, chairman of the Gandhi Ashram Trust, chaired the programme.

Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Kumar Badhe attended the event as special guest.
